We have an outstanding herd of miniature donkeys that demonstrate the characteristics prized in this breed––excellent conformation, friendly disposition, and good health. Our donkeys have distinguished themselves in shows around the United States and Europe, and you will find Capstone Ranch miniature donkeys in some of the most discerning breeding programs around the country.
We fell in love with miniature donkeys, however, not because of the allure of the showring, but because of their entertaining personalities and their easy-going nature. We consider our miniature donkeys to be the best antidote for the high stress of fast-paced modern lifestyles so many of us experience every day. There is something about the calm, tranquil demeanor of a miniature donkey peacefully grazing in our backyard that calls us to slow down and take time for the small pleasures in life. Each donkey has a distinct personality and their interactions with each other never cease to amaze and fascinate us. Life is definitely more fun with miniature donkeys.
We consider miniature donkeys to be easy keepers. They do not tend to test fences (like goats, for example), feeding requirements are simple, and breeding and foaling problems are rare. Your miniature donkeys will appreciate a simple structure, like a 3-sided shed, for protection from the rain. They will also need hay or good grass for grazing, and fresh water. We worm and immunize our donkeys regularly. The farrier visits every 3 months to trim their hooves. (Hoof care schedules may differ depending on the terrain of your property.)
What do we do with our donkeys? Well, for starters, we love on them. As much as we can! Some days, that might mean a quick rub of the ears or extended scratching sessions. However, we know we are too busy when we don't get outside to spend time with our donkeys––and they will not hesitate to let us know what they think about the situation! We drive through pens of donkeys to get to our house, and our donkeys usually block the driveway and surround the car to get our attention. Regardless of the kind of day we are having, a reminder from our donkeys to slow down contributes to our quality of life in countless ways.
We also love to share our miniature donkeys with others. We've participated in community events like charity walks and festivals. Our donkeys have visited schools, our local Veteran's Hospital, local churches, Very Special Arts festival, and children's summer camps. We also love to take our donkeys on walks around our neighborhood. Sometimes, we will load a few donkeys in our trailer and take them on a field trip to our local park to enjoy the walking trails––we have little pack saddles and they are happy to carry our water bottles, books, and snacks. Other times, we will hitch them up to our cart and let them take us for a ride! It's fun for us to share the time with our donkeys, and the donkeys never fail to bring a smile to anyone who sees them.
